The pleasures of love recollected and the possibilities of love
anticipated are contemplated in “A Little Night Music,” the musical by
Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler currently in revival on Broadway at
the Walter Kerr Theater. The satisfactions of love in the present?
That’s a more complicated matter in this melancholy romantic comedy.
But for theater lovers there can be no greater current pleasure than to
witness Bernadette Peters perform the show’s signature number, “Send In
the Clowns,” with an emotional transparency and musical delicacy that
turns this celebrated song into an occasion of transporting artistry.
I’m not sure I’ve ever experienced with such palpable force — or such
prominent goose bumps — the sense of being present at an indelible
moment in the history of musical theater.
Ms. Peters’s undertaking of the role of Desirée Armfeldt, a
barnstorming actress in turn-of-the-last-century Sweden with a
complicated home life, has been hotly anticipated since it was announced
that she would take over from Catherine Zeta-Jones in Trevor Nunn’s
production of the 1973 musical. Almost equally mouthwatering was the
prospect of Elaine Stritch grabbing the baton from Angela Lansbury as
Madame 传世私服 Armfeldt, Desirée’s imperious mother. Both actresses have storied
histories with the work of Mr. Sondheim, the long-reigning master of the
contemporary musical.
One of the most accomplished musical-theater performers of her
generation, Ms. Peters created important roles in two of his shows —
“Sunday in the Park With George” and “Into the Woods” — and her previous
appearance on Broadway came in the 2004 revival of “Gypsy,” the beloved
1959 musical for which the young Mr. Sondheim provided the lyrics.
Hence the breathless hush that descends on the theater as the first
strains of “Send In the Clowns” are heard late in the second act. For
musical theater aficionados the moment comes freighted with anxiety,
hope, suspense — more or less the same emotions, as it happens, that
torment the men and women trying to sort out their unsatisfactory love
lives in the show.
Desirée has just come to realize that the dreams of reuniting with
her now-married former lover Fredrik Egerman (Alexander Hanson) were the
comforting delusions of a sultry summer night. Alone with Fredrik at
last, she drops the role of the worldly seductress and carefree flirt
that she assumed in order to play Fredrik’s renewed infatuation against
her young lover’s obsessive devotion. The heart she has kept under wraps
for too long speaks forth the unhappy truth: The love they shared in
their youth and brushed aside so cavalierly cannot be recaptured without
painful cost in middle age. Closer than ever before, they are also
infinitely farther apart.
The halting phrases of the song suggest the overwhelming emotion
Desirée is just keeping in check. Ms. Peters invests each brittle line
with a full measure of feeling without losing the arc of the music or
any of the delicate irony in the lyrics. Despite her sadness Desirée is
too generous and too sophisticated to make a melodrama even of her own
heartbreak. And yet while Ms. Peters’s Desirée erases her tears with
flashing smiles, the inner devastation comes through with moving
clarity. Ms. Peters transmits with equal force the sense of Desirée
growing into new wisdom about what matters in love — and in life — at
long last, and much too late.
The nuanced truth Ms. Peters brings to this scene is not,
unfortunately, the overall hallmark of this production, originally seen
at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London. For long stretches Mr. Nunn’s
staging, on a minimal set by David Farley that suggests a hallway in a
dreary summer hotel, seems to be waltzing in cement shoes. The coarser
elements in Mr. Wheeler’s book are underscored with an off-putting
snigger, as if this romantic roundelay were little more than a
galumphing sex farce.
A second viewing increased my admiration for Mr. Hanson’s natural
grace and easygoing humor in the central male role of Fredrik. But it
only mildly tempered my disappointment in Ramona Mallory’s simpering as
Fredrik’s young wife, Anne, and Leigh Ann Larkin’s often overbearing,
leering Petra. (Ms. Larkin does sing “The Miller’s Son” impeccably.)
Still more disappointing is that Ms. Peters, gorgeous though her
“Send In the Clowns” certainly is, does not always inflect her
performance with glinting suggestions of the real depths in Desirée’s
heart. The odd, quasi-British accent — fundamentally pointless since the
characters are supposedly Swedish — adds a layer of artifice to the
performance that is only entirely discarded when Ms. Peters sings. (Ms.
Mallory also employs an accent, to still more arch effect.)
No mannered accent mars Ms. Stritch’s bone-dry turn as Desirée’s elderly
but by no means retiring mother, whose boudoir career in a happier
heyday for romance she recounts with relish in the song “Liaisons.”
Ms. Stritch is not, to be sure, a Madame Armfeldt in the traditional,
elegantly acerbic mold, as the wonderful Ms. Lansbury essentially was.
She is less interested in perfuming the stage with Old World charm than
in communicating the hard, inescapable life truths that have lodged in
the old dame’s heart.
As might be expected from a performer of her finely calibrated comic
instincts, Ms. Stritch brings to virtually every one of Madame
Armfeldt’s lines a sharp, at times excoriating wit. Nobody can outdo Ms.
Stritch in the deployment of strategic pauses that attach powder kegs
to seemingly sparkless lines. Explosions of laughter duly greet this
plain-spoken dowager’s rueful observations about the decaying graces of
the world. (She lands a solid laugh just by altering her pronunciation
of the word “liaisons.”)
But the cool ferocity of Ms. Stritch’s Madame Armfeldt often shades
into something approaching existential fear. As she sings “Liaisons,”
her hands clutch out at the recollected joys of the past as if they are
shimmering visions she sees receding before her. And when Madame
Armfeldt makes a macabre toast to death, there is the sense that she
truly sees the shadows gathering around her despite the bright nights of
the Swedish summer. (But I wish Ms. Stritch hadn’t spoiled the chill
with a wicked grin as Madame Armfeldt is wheeled away.)
Almost as heart-rending as Ms. Peters’s “Send In the Clowns” is Ms.
Stritch’s delivery of one of Madame Armfeldt’s last speeches, in which
she observes with a sense of resigned despair that the Croatian count
she spurned in her youth may well have been the great love of her life.
This sad knowledge is the seed of her impatience with Desirée’s
unsatisfactory romantic career, which Ms. Stritch underscores in
withering tones. How painful for a mother to have watched her beloved
daughter make the same mistakes she once made, opening the door to true
fulfillment only to find that, as 传世 Desirée sings, “no one is there.”
My first thought was to receive a jewelry box (or three) to hold all his stuff. At least it would be out of the drawer and in a more appropriate place. I wasn't crazy about that idea so I asked a mate in the event that they had any ideas. They suggested a jewelry armoire.
Usually silver jewelry include metal jewelry, Silver Jewelry, glass jewelry, Pearl jewelry etc. There is hundreds of online jewelry stores that offers silver designs. silver jewelry are using from very long time as a high stylish silver accessories among people. silver jewelry is cute, it is flashy and it makes you feel . What is more, for most of us the affordable prices mean that they can indulge. regularly without blowing the every month budget, which is always a bonus, in a bad economy. They can select some sterling silver jewelry from the net silver jewelry wholesale. It is nice news for the young girls who have no much money. The jewelry's useful life was meant to compliment the apparel for the special occasion.
By far, clothes are the most difficult for me to get rid of as I keep thinking that I will have occasion to wear again what has not been worn in years. It wasn't simple to let go of some things, when I recalled how much I had paid for them and how small they had been used. After several hours, my closet was neat and my dresser drawers were all organized, save for one.
The drawer in query was one that held a lifetime worth of gifts from my relatives and friends as wholesale silver jewelry. I had accumulated that I started putting them in one of the top drawers of my dresser, which was beginning to look like the pirates treasure chest. Not only did I store my jewelry away, I never wore it anymore as digging through that drawer for the right piece appeared more trouble than it was worth. I decided I needed to do something about that as well.
Thinking this appeared like a pleasant solution to my issue, I looked around online jewelry wholesale and found one that could hold all my jewelry and matched my existing bedroom furniture. It arrived on a saturday and I started what I thought would be the arduous task of organizing my jewelry. As it turns out, I had plenty of fun going through all the pieces and the memories that went with them. More importantly, the armoire displayed cheap silver jewelry beautifully, and I found myself taking great care to place each necklace, ring, earring and bracelet. These was three times very happy with my purchase, but the jewelry armoire did something even better for me. The following Monday before leaving for work, I recalled a pair of earrings I had placed in the armoire and decided to put them on. I hadn't worn earrings to work (or anywhere, for that matter) in a very long time. That day, I received several compliments about my earrings. The next day, I found myself going back to the armoire to accessorize again.
It is now been several months since I bought wholesale jewelry armoire and picking out jewelry to wear has become an every day occurrence. I enjoy having all my pieces on display to select from and wearing my jewelry again has caused me to take a small more pride in my appearance. I am very happy that I can now appreciate and make use of my collection in lieu of banishing it to a dresser drawer.
Women’s precarious rights in Afghanistan have begun seeping away.
Girls’ schools are closing; working women are threatened; advocates are
attacked; and terrified families are increasingly confining their
daughters to home.
For women, instability, as much as the Taliban themselves, is the
enemy. Women are casualties of the fighting, not only in the already
conservative and embattled Pashtun south and east, but also in districts
in the north and center of the country where other armed groups have
sprung up.
As Afghan and Western governments explore reconciliation with the
Taliban, women fear that the peace they long for may come at the price
of rights that have improved since the Taliban government was overthrown
in 2001.
“Women do not want war, but none of them want the Taliban of 1996 again; 传奇世界 no one wants to be imprisoned in the yards of their houses,” said
Rahima Zarifi, the Women’s Ministry representative from the northern
Baghlan Province.
Interviews around the country with at least two dozen female members
of Parliament, government officials, activists, teachers and young girls
suggest a nuanced reality — fighting constricts women’s freedoms nearly
as much as a Taliban government, and conservative traditions already
limit women’s rights in many places.
Women, however, express a range of fears about a Taliban return, from
political to domestic — that they will be shut out of negotiations
about any deals with the insurgents and that the Taliban’s return would
drive up bride prices, making it more profitable for a family to force
girls into marriage earlier.
For many women, the prospect of a resurgence of the Taliban or other
conservative groups is stark. “It will ruin our life,” said Shougoufa,
40, as she sorted through sequins and gold sparkles at the bazaar in the
city of Pul-i-Khumri in Afghanistan’s north.
“I am a tailor and I need to come to the bazaar to buy these things,”
she said. “But if the Taliban come, I will not be able to come. Already
we are hearing some girls cannot go to their work anymore.”
In teachers’ tea-break rooms, beauty shop training sessions, bazaars
and the privacy of their homes, young women worry that their parents
will marry them off early, so they will not be forced to marry Taliban.
In the Pashtun-dominated district of Taghob, east of Kabul, girls’
schools have been closed and any teaching is done at home, the
provincial education director said.
That does not trouble some local officials.
“Look, our main priority is to feed our people, to provide rest and
to protect their lives,” said Haji Farid, a local member of Parliament.
“Why are people focusing on education and sending girls to school? Boys
walk three, four, five kilometers to their school. How can a girl walk
two, three, four kilometers? During a war you cannot send a girl beyond
her door. No one can guarantee her honor. So it is hard to send your
daughter to school.”
In Kandahar, Helmand and Zabul, all unstable southern provinces,
there are girls’ schools open in the provincial capitals, but in
outlying districts there are few, if any. In Zabul Province, there are
just six schools for girls, four in the capital and two outside, but few
families send their girls to school because of the fighting, said
Muhammad Alam, the acting head of the provincial education department.
In Baghlan Province, in northern Afghanistan, the situation for women
has steadily worsened over the past year. Ms. Zarifi, the Women’s
Ministry representative, has endured assassination attempts and
demonstrations against her work. Three months ago, a female member of
the provincial council was paralyzed in an attack, and a woman was
stabbed to death in the daytime in the middle of the provincial capital
earlier in July.
By contrast, most of Kapisa Province, which lies northeast of Kabul,
is peaceful. There is a mediation program in the capital to help women
and girls when they face domestic violence. In the predominantly
ethnically Tajik north there are large, lively schools for girls, where
families even allow those who are married to complete high school.
Women’s advocates are concerned that they are increasingly being shut
out of political decisions. At an international conference in Kabul on
July 20, which was meant to showcase the country’s plans for the future,
President Hamid Karzai said nothing about how women’s rights might be
protected in negotiations.
The very first meeting on negotiations, held by Mr. Karzai on July 22
with former leaders who had fought the Taliban, did not include a single
woman, despite government pledges. When asked, government officials
said that women would be included in later sessions.
Although Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has also pledged
that she will not desert Afghan women and that any deal with the Taliban
that traded peace for women’s rights was “a red line,” women remain
wary.
“Right now it’s a big challenge for women to go to school and work,
but at least according to our Constitution and laws they have the right
to do so,” said Nargis Nehan, 31, an Afghan women’s advocate.
“If the Taliban come back, by law women will be restricted and not allowed 传世 to leave their homes,” she said, adding, “Maybe not everywhere, but in those districts where they are in power.”
There is also the real possibility that a deal with the Taliban could
stoke the anger of non-Pashtuns who once fought and still fear them,
raising the prospect of renewed fighting.
Afghanistan’s women have long led exceptionally constrained lives.
The combination of a male-dominated tribal culture in which women have
been often treated as little more than chattel, combined with a
conservative practice of Islam and a nationwide lack of education, meant
that long before the Taliban arrived in the mid-1990s, women had few
opportunities beyond the home.
The mujahedeen leaders who forced out the Soviets in the late 1980s
were as conservative as the Taliban in many places, keeping women at
home in order to preserve family honor instead of educating them or
integrating them into the government.
“Families want to send their daughters to school, but it is hard for
them to decide to do so because of the fighting and insecurity,” said
Mr. Alam, the head of provincial education in Zabul Province.
The families of women who work in offices are threatened, said Rahima
Jana, who heads the province’s Department of Women’s Affairs. And the
group Human Rights Watch documented instances of night letters meant to
scare women into staying at home.
“Security is a big challenge, and we cannot work when there is bad
security,” Ms. Jana said. “Last year was much better than this year.”
In Mahmud-e Raqi, 12 teenage girls sat around a small trunk filled
with beauticians’ tools — combs, boxes of hair dye, scissors, nail
polish, hair spray — and watched closely as the instructor sat one of
the girls in a desk chair and demonstrated how to cut off split ends
evenly.
In most places in the world this scene would hardly be a sign of
women’s liberation, but in this corner of Afghanistan, it meant a great
deal. The girls, ages 15 to 17, had been allowed to come from their
villages to the provincial capital; they will take home a trunk of
beauty goods and can earn their own money in their homes by offering
beauty services to women in their village.
This chance at determining a little of their future is what they fear
will be threatened if the Taliban return through a negotiated peace
settlement.
“They will beat us and forbid us from this freedom, the freedom to
come here, to this class; they will stop us from doing things,” said
Biboli, 16, a girl with long brown hair barely covered by a thin white
veil.
The greatest fear is that no one is really listening, said Habiba Shamim, one of the instructors.
“Please,” she pleaded. “Carry our words to people.”
In 1995, Gela Nash-Taylor (wife of Duran Duran's John Taylor) and Pamela
Skaist-Levy, both residing in Pacoima,California, decided to create their own
fashion label,Travis Jeans, selling maternity pants. In 1996 the girls changed
the name to Juicy Couture, the aim was to create
girly apparel and a label equal to that of other major labels, but to be more
affordable to the general public (although this is no longer the case, as most
of their apparel is priced at more than $100 USD). Their line, which they called
"Juicy Couture," was to include a variety of athletic and casual wear, most
notably the velour tracksuit that won Juicy Couture a great deal of popularity.
Taylor and Levy did not have much money with which to start their label, thus
leading to a slow start-up of the company. In 1996, after establishing their
company and needing to get the brand in the public eye,the women sent their
completed designs to celebrities.Madonna, credited with turning the velour
tracksuit into a trend, was sent a track suit with "Madge" embroidered on it
(Juicy Couture rarely uses "Madge" on their clothing anymore). Madonna was seen
wearing the tracksuit, and the company became a success almost instantly. Juicy
Couture was a very limited brand, being available at very few locations such as
Neiman Marcus; Around 2004, the velour tracksuit once again became very popular
and Juicy Couture and Ed hardy bags then
became a worldwide known brand.
In 2006, Taylor and Levy introduced a new line called 'Couture Couture'

of the two fashion designers, only carried in high ended stores. The first

Have you ever heard about juicy couture before? It is a famous brand all over
the world. A lot of people especially women have deep interest in Juicy
Couture.
Actually, Juicy Couture is a West Coast fashion company selling its lines of
modern casual and sports clothing and accessories. There lines have a perfect
touch of class and style. The Juicy name became popular when Hollywood
celebrities began wearing their clothes and carrying their bags.
With the popularity of their line came the rush of cheap fakes. So when you
go shopping for your first Juicy Handbag be careful and look for the following
pitfalls. I will show you the important thing when buy your ideal juicy
couture.
First, when purchasing a juicy couture
handbags, look for dark not very glossy leather. The leather is softer and
thinner cheaper bags are made of thicker rougher leather. Secondly, you should
look inside the bag and check to see if the lining is soft cotton. If it has a
cheap synthetic lining that is not smooth and flexible, it is probably a
fake.
Next, take a look at the stitching on the bag see if it has been done cleanly
and with an even stitch. If the bag looks like it has been rushed through the
machines it probably is a fake.
Remember a high quality bag takes fine quality materials and workmanship and
cannot be sold cheaply What is more, the other thing I should tell you is how to
keep your juicy couture bags correctly. It is really important to keep your bag.
There are several aspects you should know.
First, put a hand sanitizer in your purse. It is a simple step but will
prevent a lot of dirt and grime from getting on your purse. Make sure you keep
the hand sanitizer in an easily Juicy couture jewelry location.
Brush your purse every so often. If your purse is made of suede or velour,
use a soft bristle brush or a specialized purse brush on it. This will help
prevent stains from setting. Often times stains will brush right out of these
fabrics.
Clean out the stains as you see them. Make sure that you get a stain out of
your purse as soon as you see it, which will prevent stains from setting and
permanently ruining your purse. Purchase a cloth cleanser at your local purse
boutique and use it periodically to clean your purse.
Use a leather balm on leather purses. If your purse is made of leather its
important to keep the leather conditioned. Conditioning your purses leather will
make your purse last longer and it will keep it looking brand new. If this step
is neglected, the leather may dry out over time.
Pay just as close attention to the inside of the purse as you do the outside.
Many individuals tend to focus on how the outside of their purse looks while
they neglect the inside of their purse. Oftentimes, this will leave a purse
looking clean on the outside and grimy on the inside.Choosing crystal
jewelry as well as keeping juicy couture bags is both important steps. You

What are the tips for choosing the color of sunglasses?
The first and foremost tip is to notice whether there are UV-stop labels.
Well qualified sunglasses would be labelled with 100% UV-stop, UV400 or UV cut.
Sunglasses of poor quality are more likely to bring harm to eyes. Next, gray,
brown and green color lenses are more recommended, for those lenses have a
comparatively better ability to absorb infrared ray and ultraviolet radiation.
Into the bargain, gray lenses could present the wearers a vision of little
chromatic aberration with Juicy couture jewelry; brown lenses
are able to filter much blue-ray, which could improve the contrast and sharpness
of the vision. They perform especially well in foggy days or in environment
where the air is severely polluted.
Is it a must to wear sunglasses when one goes out in a sunny day?
It is necessary to wear sunglasses and crystal jewelry when the sunlight
or the reflection is too strong, or it is not necessary. It depends on the
strength of the sunlight or reflection outside, but not on the seasons.
Something else needing attention is that sunglasses is a must when one goes to
